Stop specifying Weyerhaeuser hardboard siding by name alone. The brand is not a specification. I learned that the hard way in 2022, and it cost me $3,200 and a week on a door assembly order.
In my first year as a commercial specifier—that was 2014—I wrote 'Weyerhaeuser hardboard siding, 5/16-in., factory primed' on a project manual. It looked fine. It wasn't. The contractor approved it, and then we got to the opening for the exterior door. The door handle was too short for the siding build-up. Not a product defect. A details gap. I checked the siding, I checked the door, I never checked the interface.
That mistake created my rule: names give you a starting point, not a guarantee. If you're writing a specification today, you need to be honest about how much has changed.

It does not make every accessory in a building automatically compatible. The wall assembly is a system. Siding interacts with flashing, air barrier, trim, windows, and door hardware.
Which brings me to the door handle issue. A lot of projects get a beautiful siding schedule and a matching entrance door, only to fail because the handle projection didn't match the total wall build-up. The handle length, the backplate, the latch throw—all of that has to be coordinated with the siding thickness. A door handle is not a 'pick later' item. It's an interface component. I choose the handle after I know the siding build-up now. Not before. (Note to self: never ignore the cross-section detail again.)
Argument 3: The Surprising Killer Is the Small Detail
The surprise wasn't the price difference between premium and budget. It was how much hidden cost came from mismatched details. On one project, the siding was right, the trim was right, and the door was right. The handle was wrong. One piece. You still have to reconcile the latch with the body panel. Simplicity at one level just moves the complexity to the connections. A specification that says 'Weyerhaeuser hardboard siding' and nothing else is the building product equivalent of saying 'vehicle' and expecting a working truck.
What About 'Liquid Glass'?
A client once asked me 'how to turn off liquid glass.' I thought they meant a coating on the windows. Turned out they were talking about a phone screen protector. No shared mental model. That conversation taught me more about specification writing than any seminar.
The same gap happens with building materials. When I write 'hardboard siding,' I mean one precise thing. A generalist might read 'hardboard' and imagine something closer to MDF. A contractor might interpret 'siding' as any panel. The words are too loose. If I don't draw the cross-section and name the components, I'm just hoping everybody guesses correctly.

Reasonable Pushback
Someone might say: 'The brand is trusted for a reason. If I always use Weyerhaeuser, I get consistency.' I do not entirely disagree. Consistency is a real benefit. But consistency in branding is not the same as consistency in application. You can be consistent with the name and inconsistent with the install.
Another pushback: 'Don't overcomplicate it. Siding has been installed for a hundred years.' Fair. The fundamentals haven't changed. But the execution has. Codes, fasteners, flashing tapes, air barriers, and substrate options have all evolved. The attitude 'we always do it this way' is a luxury for people who haven't dealt with the fallout when details collide.
And someone might argue: 'You're making a bigger deal because you made one mistake.' That's true. I made the mistake. I documented it. I created a pre-check list. In the 18 months since Q1 2024, the list has caught 47 potential errors before they reached the field. So yes, I'm making a big deal out of it. Because it works.
What I Actually Spec Now
I don't specify 'Weyerhaeuser hardboard siding' by name alone anymore. I write it this way:
- Manufacturer and line, including the exact series and finish system.
- Thickness, density, and edge profile, tied to the product data sheet.
- Fastener schedule and spacing, including the screw/trim head color.
- Flashing and sealant details at openings, especially window and door transitions.
- Door handle and hinge schedule, with manufacturer series and backplate depth.
That list looks simple. It is simple. But when I look back at the 300 orders I've handled, I wish I had tracked interface issues more carefully from the start. What I can say anecdotally is that most of our first-order problems weren't material failures. They were missing coordinates between adjacent products.
