Who This Checklist Is For
If you're specifying, ordering, or installing engineered wood products — I-joists, Trus Joist, OSB, glulam, plywood, or framing lumber — this checklist is for you. I've been in procurement for 8 years, handling engineered wood orders for mid-rise and commercial projects. I've personally made (and documented) 12 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $47,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist to prevent others from repeating my errors.
This isn't theory. It's the five things I check on every project now — after learning the hard way.

Step 1: Verify Specs Against Physical Samples (Don't Trust the PO)
In my first year (2017), I ordered 200 Trus Joist units for a mid-rise project. The PO looked fine. The spec sheet looked fine. But when the truck arrived, the flange width was wrong — by half an inch. It looked correct on screen. On site, every single hanger had to be re-ordered. That error cost $890 in redo plus a 1-week delay, and I had to explain to the GC why his framing crew was sitting idle.
Now my rule is: before the PO goes out, I physically check a sample or a recent delivery photo from the same product run. I also call the supplier to verbally confirm the critical dimensions — flange width, depth, span rating. Sounds basic, but you'd be surprised how often specs get transposed between similar product lines. Seriously, just take 10 minutes to confirm.
Step 2: Pre-Check Acoustic Performance (Don't Assume Silence)
Fast forward to September 2022. We'd installed Trus Joist floors with OSB subflooring in a luxury apartment complex. Looked great. Felt solid. Then the noise complaints started — footsteps from above sounded like drum solos. We hadn't specified sound proofing panels between floors, assuming the engineered wood assembly would dampen sound naturally. Wrong assumption.
We ended up retrofitting acoustic underlayment and ceiling-mounted sound proofing panels — a $3,200 fix that should've been $800 if planned upfront. What I learned: never assume engineered wood assemblies automatically meet acoustic requirements. Check the STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings for your specific floor-ceiling assembly. And if the project calls for it, budget for dedicated sound proofing panels from the start. Some of the best ones are actually made from recycled glass bottles, which is a nice sustainability angle — but only if you spec them early.
Step 3: Map Out All Utility Penetrations Before Ordering
This one hurts to admit. In Q1 2024, we were framing a bathroom renovation with OSB subfloor and engineered wood walls. The plumber installed the shower, and a month later — leak. The shower head connection wasn't properly aligned with the pre-cut opening. Water seeped into the OSB, which swelled and delaminated. Cost: $1,200 in material replacement plus the plumber's redo.
If you've ever wondered how to fix a leaking shower head, the real answer is: prevent it during the framing stage. Map out every plumbing and electrical penetration before you order your engineered wood. Mark the exact locations on your subfloor and wall panels. Pre-cut or pre-drill where possible. It's way easier to do this before installation than to cut into an already-assembled floor system. Honestly, I'm not sure why this step gets skipped so often. My best guess is that trades work in silos — framers frame, plumbers plumb — and nobody connects the dots until there's water damage.
Step 4: Confirm Sustainability Documentation Before You Promise It
A client asked for '100% sustainable materials' on a project last year. I said yes, because Weyerhaeuser has a strong sustainability report and FSC-certified sourcing. But when the client asked for specific documentation — chain-of-custody certificates, recycled content percentages — I didn't have them ready. Cue the embarrassing scramble.
The lesson: if you're going to claim sustainability, have the paperwork ready. Weyerhaeuser, for context, reported approximately $7.7 billion in net sales for 2023 (as of their annual report), and they've invested heavily in certified sourcing and transparent reporting. But even with a supplier like that, you need to request the specific documentation for each product line — whether it's Trus Joist, OSB, or plywood. Also worth knowing: some sound proofing panels and insulation products use recycled glass bottles as feedstock, which can contribute to LEED points. But again — get the documentation upfront. Don't assume it's automatic.
Step 5: Know Your Supplier's Supply Chain (Vertical Integration Matters)
In 2020, I ordered a large batch of framing lumber through a broker. Price was great. Delivery was quoted at 3 weeks. At week 4, I started chasing. Week 5, still no truck. Turns out the broker didn't actually have the inventory — they were depending on a mill that had a shutdown. That delay cost us $4,700 in idle labor and rescheduling fees.
That's when I shifted to suppliers with vertical integration. Weyerhaeuser owns timberlands, mills, and distribution. They're not dependent on spot-market availability. When they say they have 2x10s or Trus Joist in stock, they mean it. The peace of mind is worth something — especially when you've been burned by a delay like I was. I can only speak to domestic operations here. If you're dealing with international logistics, there are probably factors I'm not aware of.
What This Checklist Doesn't Cover (And Why)
A few things I deliberately left out:
- Pricing negotiations. I don't do price comparisons anymore — too many variables. What I will say: vertical integration often means more stable pricing, but I can't promise you'll always get the lowest number.
- Installation techniques. I'm a procurement guy, not a carpenter. I know enough to verify specs, but I leave the nailing patterns and joist spacing to the pros. That's their expertise, not mine.
- Specific model recommendations. Every project is different. What works for a high-rise apartment might be wrong for a single-family home. The vendor who said 'this isn't our strength — here's who does it better' earned my trust for everything else. Knowing your boundaries is a feature, not a bug.
Bottom line: a checklist is only as good as the discipline to use it. I've learned that the hard way, multiple times. Hopefully, this saves you at least one of those lessons.
