The 6-Point I-Joist Ordering Checklist That Saved My Crew From 3 Costly Mistakes

If you're ordering I-joists, Trus Joist, or glulam beams for the first time—or even the twentieth time—there's a good chance you're ignoring something that'll cost you. I know because I've made most of the common mistakes myself, and I've documented every one of them.

I've been handling engineered wood orders for the better part of a decade now. In that time, I've personally made—and more importantly, written down—about 14 significant screw-ups that totaled roughly $15,600 in wasted budget. Most of them were completely avoidable. So I put together this six-point checklist for my team. Now I'm sharing it here, because honestly, I'd rather you learn from my facepalm moments than your own.

This checklist is for anyone who's ordering engineered floor systems, roof trusses, or framing packages. If you're a GC, a framer, or a specifier, these six steps will save you time, money, and a lot of frustration.

Step 1: Verify Your Bearing Conditions Before You Call

The single biggest mistake I see—and the one that bit me hardest in my first year (2017)—is ordering joists without confirming the actual bearing conditions on site. You'd think this is obvious, but I promise you it's not.

Most buyers focus on span and load and completely miss the bearing details: what size ledger, what type of hanger, and whether you have a girder or a wall below. The question everyone asks is 'what's the span?' The question they should ask is 'what's the bearing condition at each end?'

On one job in September 2022, I ordered 48 I-joists based on a simple span table. The condition at the house end was a standard 2x6 ledger—fine. But the garage end had a steel beam with a 3.5-inch flange. The joists needed a special end detail that I hadn't specified. Every single joist had to be modified on site: $3,200 in extra labor plus a 1-week delay.

Check this first: Get the actual bearing width, material, and connection type for each end of every joist. Draw it if you have to. Seriously, draw it.

Step 2: Check the 'Hidden' Specs—Span Rating and Camber

Here's the thing about engineered wood: it's not all the same. Two pieces of Trus Joist can look identical and perform completely differently based on span rating and camber. I once ordered 60 pieces of what I thought were standard I-joists for a floor system. They arrived, and my crew started setting them. Then we noticed: they were all flat. No camber.

Actually, they had a slight camber—like, maybe 1/8 inch. But the spec called for 1/2 inch. The manufacturer had shipped the economy grade. I hadn't checked. The result: $890 in redo costs plus reordering the correct grade (ugh).

Here's your check: Ask for the span rating (like 30, 40, or 50) and the camber tolerance. If your project has a long clear span, you want the higher rating. Don't assume the standard is good enough. At least, that's been my experience.

Step 3: Don't Forget the 'Garbage Specs'—End Blocking and Flashing

This is the step most people overlook. You've got your joists spec'd, your loads calculated, and your connectors ordered. But what about the blocking at the ends? What about the web stiffeners? And the flashing at the rim joist?

On a 42-piece order where every single I-joist needed end blocking for a cantilever condition we'd missed in the original takeoff, I had to stop production and order a separate blocking package. The mistake affected a $12,000 order. The cost of forgetting: $450 for the blocking plus a 2-day delay. The lesson: before you hit 'order,' list every single accessory. Use the manufacturer's cut sheet as a checklist (not as an afterthought).

Step 4: Confirm Your Span Rating vs. Actual Deflection

This one is subtle. The numbers said the standard span rating would work for our 18-foot clear span. My gut said something felt off about the floor stiffness. I went with my gut and cross-checked the actual deflection using the Weyerhaeuser span calculator. Turns out, the standard rating gave us L/360 deflection—fine for residential, but the homeowner's request for a marble entry hall meant we actually needed L/480. The difference? One size up in the I-joist depth.

The check: Compare the assumed span rating against the actual deflection requirement for your specific floor finish. If you have tile, marble, or a wide-open floor plan, you might need a stiffer system.

Step 5: Audit the 'Add-Ons' Before You Sign

I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included' before 'what's the price.' The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. Here's what I check now:

  • Setup fees for custom hanger patterns
  • Rush delivery premiums (next-day adds 50-100% over standard)
  • Shipping to a jobsite with limited access
  • Crane-offload fees

On one job in Q1 2024, the estimate looked great—$8,200 for the package. But after adding setup for custom hanger holes ($350), rush delivery ($1,100), and offload at a site with no dock ($400), the total was $10,050. The initial price was misleading.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), all fees should be disclosed upfront. But that doesn't always happen. So ask: 'Can you list every additional cost, even if it seems minor?'

Step 6: Do a Final 'Fit Check' Before You Order

This is my last step, and I only added it after my third rejection in Q1 2024. Create a physical or digital mock-up of the entire floor system using the actual joist depths, panel sizes, and connection details. I use a spreadsheet with the manufacturer's spec sheets. But the key is: check for conflicts with plumbing, HVAC, and electrical.

I once ordered 24-inch deep I-joists for a basement ceiling. They fit perfectly on the plans. But when the HVAC contractor showed up, they had to install a 16-inch duct through the joist bay. We had to cut the joists and install steel flitch plates: $2,100 in extra cost and a 4-day delay. If I'd done the fit check with the MEP drawings, I would have ordered 14-inch joists instead.

The check: Before you finalize the order, cross-reference your framing plan with the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans. If there's a conflict, adjust the joist depth or layout now—not after the joists are delivered.

One More Thing: The 'Green' Check

If you're working on a project with sustainability requirements (and more are every year), make sure your engineered wood is certified. Weyerhaeuser's sourcing is third-party verified, but always confirm with your supplier. Per FTC Green Guides, a product claimed as 'sustainable' should be substantiated with certification (like SFI, FSC, or PEFC). Don't assume—ask for the cert number.

To summarize: use this checklist, and you'll avoid the most expensive mistakes that have cost me over $15,000 in rework and delays. Bottom line: check bearing, check specs, check accessories, check deflection, check add-ons, and check for MEP conflicts. That's six steps. It takes about an hour. That hour is worth thousands.
